Newborn Baby Care Tips in Summer!

A mother holding her baby while standing in a purple lupine field
  1. Summers are never easy for anyone, especially with the current soaring temperatures across the world. Your baby is no different, and as a new parent, you are bound to be frantic and wondering how you go about keeping baby cool during the summer. Most parents have questions like- What do you feed them or how much do you bathe them? Yes, your grandmother may have some very solid home remedies for rashes, or you may be receiving other advice from various people on how to care for a newborn baby during the summer months. We’re here to help you make your way through this advice and give your little angel the care they require based on professional input.

How Frequently should you Bathe your Newborn in the Summer?

This depends entirely on your baby and their preferences. The only thing to keep in mind here is that the water should not be cold. Neither should it be hot, ensure it is just a little warm or maybe even room temperature for a newborn baby in summer by dipping your elbow into the water. This is ideal for your baby to cool down and a couple of times a day will not make them fall sick.

Can you Use Oil for a Baby Massage?

Baby oil massages are vital for your little one’s skin and will keep their skin hydrated and cool during summer. Ensure it is an oil that suits their skin and it is washed off well. Make a note of the fact that oil can clog pores and won’t have them breathing light if kept on the baby too long. Bay oil massages stimulate the baby’s joints circulation through the body. Your little one will have a smile on their face thanks to this baby skincare in the summer regime. They will take a nice, deep soothing nap that will give mommy and baby a chance to relax in the sweltering heat.

Can you Use Talcum Powder on your Baby’s Skin during Summer?

The vote on this is divided when you ask mothers as a lot of people believe it can be bad for the baby and not have any cooling effects. In reality, a lot of pediatricians state talcum powder can have a cooling effect on your baby and prevent rashes caused by sweat and the friction of your little one’s body against their bedding. As a new mother, you don’t have to ponder the question- how to care for newborn babies in summer. Drop the powder into your hand and gently rub it all over you’re newborn. This is to ensure they don’t breathe the powder and you do not spread excess to clog their pores.

Essential Summer Baby Care Tips

Parents taking their newborn baby for a walk in nature
Relax and take your time adjusting to the heat. Your baby and you will find your rhythm, and you’ll enjoy the summer in peace very soon. Here are a few tips on keeping baby cool in summer.

1. Baby’s Diet

If your baby is still breastfeeding, then ensure to feed them often to keep them hydrated. If they no longer are, then they are no longer under the protection of mommy’s antibodies and need to build up their immunity. Consult your doctor on what to give them. Let them suck on fruit to cool down when it comes to food for one year baby in summer. If they have just started solids, then a couple of feeds accompanied by boiled food is ideal. Keep powdered milk on hand as the regular stuff goes bad quickly in the heat.

2. Hygienic Water

As mentioned above, at 6 months and below your little one’s immunity is low and you need to protect them. All water must be boiled and thoroughly hygienic to prevent any diseases. Keeping baby cool in summer must not compromise their health. If its bottled water, then double-check the seal and keep watch for signs of dehydration.

3. Heat Rashes

Heat rashes are quite common amongst babies in the summer. Experts recommend putting two spoons of sandalwood powder in their bathwater and apply talcum powder in the manner described to keep your little one cool. Switch diapers and loose clothes if they are uncomfortable.
4. Dehydration
Dehydration can sneak up on your baby and your kids without anyone knowing. All their energy can mislead you, and you’ll never know. Monitor your baby’s urine output and for any other signs of dehydration like fever, vomiting, diarrhea, unable to drink water, no wet diaper for more than six hours, excessive drowsiness or fussiness, dry lips and mouth, no tears when crying and dizziness.

5. Away from Mosquitoes Or Bugs

Bugs swarm around your delicate baby just as much as everyone else during the summer, but they need added protection. Use bug spray but ensure it is organic and your little one is not allergic or open to harm in any way. Use air conditioning or air coolers that are regularly cleaned to keep away mosquitos. A temperature of 25°C is ideal.
6. Choosing the Right Clothes
Loose clothes ensure your little one can breathe and their skin is not suffocated. This will avoid heat rashes and have them feeling cool. While it is the norm to cover your baby’s head with a cap in some countries, this is best avoided unless it is very hot and sunny outside. Dry their head with a damp towel if they overheat and not a dry cloth.

7. Protection from Common Illness

Your baby relies on its mother’s immunity while it is being breastfed until 6 months. Once this ends, they are unprotected and left to fend for themselves. You can help them out until their immune system grows strong enough. Ensure their diet supports a healthy protection system and they are well-hydrated. Do not let them sweat too much or leave them damp for too long. Switch in immunity-boosting food supplements recommended by your doctor as well.
8. Protection from Sunburn
A baby’s skin is incredibly delicate and subject to easy burning. When you are going out, ensure to put a little baby-friendly sunscreen on them to keep those harmful rays away. Your little one will thank you for it later. A little cap is also ideal for very hot and sunny days.

9. Room Temperature

A lot of parents are paranoid about the temperature and their baby’s susceptibility to cold and illness. Being careful with your baby goes without saying, but remember they are not as delicate as they seem. A little bit of air-conditioning never hurts anyone and a temperature of 25°C is ideal. If you are using an air cooler, ensure it is clean. A baby’s damp head must not be exposed to the AC and should be dried with a damp cloth or wet wipe.
10. Consult Doctor If Necessary
If your baby is displaying symptoms of dehydration or has a stubborn rash that does not disappear with other methods such as over-the-top treatments, consider consulting a doctor. If they seem to be really struggling with the heat and in a lot of distress, it could be another issue altogether and require medical intervention.
As is the case with every step of your baby’s development, their first summer is going to be difficult but wonderful for you. Make a note of what your little one needs, and they’ll be sure to let you know, don’t you worry! Feed them a variety of organic fruits and vegetables, don’t skimp on the juices and let lose the summer wardrobe. Also, never hesitate to consult a doctor if you feel something is not right with your baby. Your role as a parent has expanded to include a fresh responsibility that can be quite enjoyable!

Best and worst supermarkets of 2019!

Waitrose has claimed victory in the battle for best supermarket, while online-only supermarket Ocado has been rated best for home delivery. Premium supermarket Marks & Spencer (M&S) took second place in our supermarket rankings. Both Waitrose and M&S were praised for the quality of own-label and fresh produce in stores, something members voted as their top priority. Asda – the UK’s third-largest supermarket – was rated worst for both its in-store and online offerings. Best and worst supermarkets – see the full results in our guide Supermarkets rated: full rankings We surveyed more than 12,000 Which? members about their favourite supermarkets in November 2018. Supermarkets were rated on a range of attributes including store appearance, quality of produce and value for money. You can see the full rankings in the table below. Overall customer score is based on how happy people were with their supermarket, and whether they would recommend it to a friend. Sample sizes for each supermarket are in brackets.

The best supermarkets A great in-store experience and a wide range of quality products helped Waitrose secure its spot at the top. Waitrose was the only shop to score five stars for the availability and helpfulness of staff in-store. Customers were also impressed with the appearance of stores and queuing times. Quality of food was key to rankings this year. 64% of those surveyed rated quality of fresh produce as the most important factor when choosing a supermarket. Both Waitrose and M&S impressed customers with excellent own-label and fresh produce. However, they fell down on value for money versus other stores. German budget stores Aldi and Lidl were the only in-store supermarkets to score five stars for value for money, but customers felt they were making a trade-off between value and the in-store experience: both supermarkets scored just one star for store appearance, staff availability and the range of products. Ocado rated best online supermarket, followed by Iceland Online-only retailer Ocado pipped frozen-food specialist Iceland to the post in our online supermarket rankings. Ocado was rated highly for availability of delivery slots and ease of finding products on the website. The range of products was rated as excellent, and own-label and fresh produce quality were considered good too. Second-place Iceland was the only online supermarket to get five stars for value, but customers were less impressed with the range of products available. This is unsurprising as Iceland specialises in frozen food, and otherwise only sells store cupboard essentials and a small selection of fresh products. The worst supermarkets Asda was left languishing at the bottom of both our in-store and online rankings with scores of 56% and 65% respectively. Own-brand items and fresh products were rated poorly by in-store shoppers. Online shoppers were unimpressed with the number and choice of substituted items. The other big four supermarkets – Morrisons, Sainsbury’s and Tesco – delivered a better in-store shopping experience and range of products but all except Morrisons were in the bottom half of the in-store rankings, thanks to middling scores across the board. Healthy food and an eco-friendly approach to packaging considered important to shoppers We asked Which? members to rate the importance of ethical and health factors when shopping for food, and to rate each supermarket based on these factors. Having a good range of healthy food came out on top, but ease of identifying sugar content and environmental packaging considerations weren’t far behind. Shoppers see room for improvement on packaging A massive 72% of those surveyed said that the availability of products without plastic packaging or with easily recycled packaging was an important consideration when choosing where to shop in-store, but just 27% felt that the current options are good or excellent – suggesting there is still a long way to go. Waitrose and Morrisons were rated highest by their customers for availability of environmentally friendly packaging. Waitrose was the only supermarket to score five stars for customers’ perceptions of ethical, environmental and health factors. 70% of Waitrose customers found it easy to identify nutritional information on its products, and 66% said they could easily identify the country of origin.

Supermarkets in Sweden!

Living in Sweden can be quite expensive as a student, for it is one of the most expensive countries in Europe. Thus, as a student it is imperative to find various ways to save money. One of the best ways to reduce the expenditure is to cook your own food. A meal in any student restaurant or university cafe is for about 75 to 100 SEK, which is approximately 8 to 10 euros. I leave the further calculation to you.
Cooking in the beginning can be time consuming. However, practice makes the man perfect! When I first arrived in Sweden I was not very efficient and well versed in cooking even though I had learned to cook some basic food items before leaving home. But, the two weeks gap between the arrival day and the start of the academic courses, provided me with a nice buffer time to organise and look around and improve my cooking skills. Furthermore, I learned to cook variety of dishes from my corridor mates some Spanish, some Japanese, some Singaporean and many more.

Supermarkets

Now, let me tell you a bit about the supermarkets in Stockholm. There are a few chains of supermarkets that can be found everywhere in and around the city. Coop, Hemkop, Lidl, ICA and Willys are a few to name. Willy is generally located on the outskirts of the city, and not generally in the central parts of the city. These supermarkets have weekly discounts on specific items, which differ from week to week. Further, each of these have an android app which can be used to register and get notifications of the weekly discounts.
One can find all the groceries and other supplies for cooking. I personally prefer Lidl, it is cheaper then most of the supermarkets and has almost everything that is required for cooking on a daily basis. The vegetable are better at Coop or Hemkop, as they are more fresh. Lidl has a good variety of frozen foods, right from frozen peas to frozen pizza and frozen french fries. The frozen foods are an essential part of student life, as it is the easiest to prepare. All one needs to do is, put it in oven for 15-20 mins and its ready to eat!

Apart from these there are a few special oriental shops in Stockholm. Most of the ingredients can be found at the major supermarkets, however, some special ingredients such as special spices and some special sauce can be found in one of the following stores: Orient Hus, Kista Grossen and Himalaya Livs.
There are lunch rooms at all the three universities, where, refrigerators, microwaves and spoons and plates are available for common use. Even these are used by large number of students they are well maintained. The refrigerators can be used to store food until lunch time and then heated just before lunch.
I have come to realize that on a very busy day, going to the shared kitchen and cooking a nice meal, while talking to other people from the corridor is relaxing and gives a homely feel. It is a very good way to have a short break from the routine of academics and work in daily life (especially during the exam time) and share and learn about various cultures.

The 14 best burgers in Singapore: A 'Ramly', some truffle and a S$10-deal

No matter how much Singaporeans dish about our love for local fare, somewhere inside us lies a deep yearning for a good burger.
Blame the likes of fast food joints like McDonald’s and Burger King for inculcating a love for a good beef patty tucked between pillowy buns, so much so that this utterly un-Asian dish is considered comfort food in this decidedly Asian city.
Certainly, picking the best burgers is as difficult as picking the best chicken rice or prawn noodles in Singapore. But we’re not afraid of a bit of hard work, so we made a list spanning burgers from dedicated burger restaurants to swanky French establishments so that you can eat your way through them and pick your own favourites.
APPLEWOOD SMOKED BACON CHEESEBURGER FROM OMAKASE BURGER, S$19.90
Fresh, sloppy, smokey and dripping with that Thousand Island-esque “secret sauce”, Omakase burgers were Singapore’s answer to Shake Shack long before the latter set foot on our shores. We love the charred, blistered edges of the USDA Choice Grade beef patties that are smashed on the grill so that their insides remain juicy and their edges cooked to a lovely blistery char. We also adore the squishy Martin’s Potato Roll buns that sink when prodded and are porous enough to absorb all the meat’s tasty juices.
BASIC BURGER FROM BURGER LABO, S$23
Owner Ken Loon’s zealousness for coaxing perfection in simplicity is on full display at this chic shack tucked away in Gillman Barracks. Several months of experimentation have yielded a technically perfect burger, with buns so shiny they might well have been lacquered by a Vietnamese artisan (it’s actually browned butter they brush onto the buns, in case you were wondering). The cleanly flavoured 170g patty within is made from a blend of grass-fed Black Angus beef neck, Aomori Gyu ribeye, Toriyama Umami Wagyu A4 tenderloin and Sendai Wagyu A5 brisket. Ask for the fried free-range egg (add S$3), which, if nothing else, will do wonders for your Instagram game.
THE BLACK SWAN BURGER FROM THE BLACK SWAN, S$30
It’s hard to go wrong when you stick to the classics. At this Great Gatsby-esque space in the heart of the business district, The Black Swan Burger has sat proudly on the menu since its launch in 2013. Its signature wagyu blend patty is crowned with a bed of caramelised onions, mature cheddar, streaky bacon and a fried egg. With a balance of smoke, succulence and meaty earthiness, this burger is just the ticket for your next power lunch.
CHEESEBURGER FROM MEATSMITH, S$16
Prime beef brisket makes for some super succulent and smoke-kissed patties at this barbeque smokehouse. Throw in some melty cheese, crunchy pickles and sturdy house-made potato buns that squish gently with each bite, and you have what is widely regarded as the best damn cheeseburger in town. It gets even better on Tuesdays, when these babies go for just S$10 a pop.
DRY-AGED BEEF BURGER FROM WOLF BURGER, S$17.90
Yes, you’ll get an excellent wagyu burger from its signature menu, but what’s not to love about the delicious rank of dry-aged beef? The meat used in these juicy patties are dry-aged for 30 days, then grilled and heaped with cheese, pickled onions and chipotle mayo. A couple of extra napkins to help manage all that sloppy goodness is always a good idea.
THE GREG NORMAN BURGER FROM BLACK TAP CRAFT BURGERS & BEER, S$26
This loud and colourful New York import does the all-American stuff well. So if your burger preference is basic, ask for the All-American Burger (S$22), which comes with the standard, but delicious, assemblage of prime beef meat patty with lettuce, tomatoes, pickles, American cheese and house sauce. If, however, you’re a little bit extra (the way Singaporeans tend to be when it comes to food), then ask for the Greg Norman Burger that’s stacked with a premium seven-ounce wagyu beef patty draped with a buttermilk dill sauce, crumbled blue cheese and arugula leaves between soft potato buns.
THE NUMBER ONE FROM 25 DEGREES BURGERS WINE & LIQUOR BAR, S$14
Rather than given names, the burgers here are numbered, so it is apt that the Number One satisfies on all counts. Between a sturdy brioche bun made from organic flour sits a thick 200g patty formed with US Angus sirloin and chuck roll, along with a host of other things that impart lots of delicious umami. Think soft and tangy crescenza cheese, sweet caramelised onions, earthy gorgonzola, bacon, rocket leaves and a piquant Thousand Island dressing.

This one’s an oldie but goodie. While there are oysters, hearty bistro classics and warm madeleines, it’s this burger that makes this celeb chef restaurant a foodie destination. Feted anywhere in the world where it’s available, the Original DB Burger is loved for its sirloin patty that hides the richness of foie gras and short ribs within. Indeed, there’s nothing humble about this burger, right down to its fluffy Parmesan buns.
THE ORIGINAL DB BURGER FROM DB BISTRO & OYSTER BAR, S$48
ORIGINAL RAMLY FROM LOOF, S$23
When was the last time you ate a Ramly burger? No, like, a really good Ramly burger. If your answer is, “I don’t remember”, then hotfoot it to rooftop lounge Loof where its elevated take on the iconic sandwich sees an Australian beef patty wrapped in a thin omelette and slathered in a “sedap” (Malay for “delicious”) sauce. It’ll give you some nostalgic pasar malam vibes, but classed up (especially with its accompanying waffle-cut fries).
SHACKBURGER FROM SHAKE SHACK, S$9.20
It’s safe to say that Shake Shack’s entry into Singapore was worth the wait… that is, if you can stand to wait in the perennial line at its outlet in Jewel Changi Airport. When it’s finally our turn to order, we ask for the ShackBurger with its flavour-packed smashed patty made from hormone-free cattle that graze in Midwestern American farms, nestled in a griddled potato bun with with gooey cheddar, and that umami-laced Shack sauce. Beef lovers can ask for a double patty for S$12.70.
SINGLE (ORIGINAL) FROM FATBURGER, S$7.90
When it first opened in Los Angeles in 1952, the sandwiches sold at Fatburger were considered large, hence the restaurant’s name. In today’s over-the-top world, they’re standard size, but refreshingly customisable. It’s hard to go wrong with an Original, which comprises a satisfying beef patty made from a ratio of 80 per cent lean American chuck and 20 per cent fat. These are shaped fresh on-site, chilled and then cooked to order. It comes capped with mayo, lettuce, tomatoes, pickles, onions, relish and mustard – which, if you ask us, is all it needs. Choose from a brioche or wholemeal bun, or a gluten-free bun for an extra S$2.90. If you’re keto dieting, you can choose no bun at all. Maximalists can order add-ons like cheese, a fried egg, beef bacon, chilli con carne and onion rings for S$1 each.
SMOKIN’ B-BOY FROM THREE BUNS, S$23
This hip and happening burger joint recently started using Tasmanian vintage beef patties made from grass-fed, free-range, hormone- and antibiotic-free retired breeder cows. These pasture-grazing cattle reportedly yields deeper flavour, which can only make the likes of the Smokin’ B-Boy burger better. In this tasty number, you get a 150g patty cloaked in melty smoked applewood cheddar and topped with caramelised strips of treacly streaky bacon, barbecue ketchup, smoky mayo, and a hearty sprinkling of crispy bawang goreng (fried shallots). All that between toasted demi brioche buns.
THE TRUFFLE BURGER FROM OVEREASY, S$28
Burger aficionados know that American-style diner OverEasy makes some killer burgers. Its posh Truffle Burger stacks a gratifyingly luscious mix of wagyu blend patty, sauteed onions, mushrooms and truffle mayo between lightly toasted potato buns. Even better, it comes with a pile of kale and Parmesan fries.

5 Different Types of Childbirth and Delivery Methods You Should Know!

Few things in life are more exciting than the birth of a new baby. This has been the case throughout human history, but childbirth options for new mothers have advanced to make the experience more safe.
child-birth
Since 1900, trends have changed dramatically with the increase of technology and modern medical practices. For instance, in 1900 almost all U.S. births occurred outside a hospital. But by 1940, more than half of births were taking place in hospitals. The trend continued exponentially and by 1969 only 1% of births occured outside a hospital.
Medical technology has made childbirth a much safer experience over the past century for both mother and baby. Hospitals have responded to trends in childbirth, such as the need for a more home-like environment in the hospital. Many hospitals now offer comfortable maternity suites that convert into state of the art delivery rooms.
An easy birth and a perfectly executed birth plan is ideal. But we know that even the most carefully planned birth can take twists and turns. In those cases, it's important to be prepared for alternative delivery methods.

Different Kinds of Childbirth and Delivery Methods

1. Vaginal Delivery

In a vaginal birth, the baby is born through the birth canal. It's hard to know when exactly you will go into labor, but most women give birth at around 38-41 weeks of pregnancy.
The nation’s largest ob-gyn organization recommends that pregnant women plan for vaginal birth unless there is a medical reason for a cesarean. In new guidelines issued in 2013, The American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists says maternal-request cesareans are especially not recommended for women planning to have several children, nor should they be performed before 39 completed weeks of pregnancy.
Benefits of vaginal delivery:
  • shorter hospital stays
  • lower infection rates
  • quicker recovery
  • babies born vaginally have a lower risk of respiratory problems

2. Cesarian Section (C-Section)

Of course, we know that not all births happen the way we plan. When complications arise, other methods of delivery are available.
A cesarean section or C-section is the delivery of a baby through a surgical incision in the mother's abdomen and uterus. In certain circumstances, a C-section is scheduled in advance. In others, it's done in response to an unforeseen complication.
Events that may require C-Section:
  • Multiples (twins, triplets, etc)
  • A very large baby
  • Previous surgery, C-Sections, or other uterine conditions
  • Baby is in breech (bottom first) or transverse (sideways) position
  • Placenta previa (when the placenta is low in the uterus and covers the cervix)
  • Fibroid or other large obstruction

3. Vaginal Birth After Cesarian

In the past, a C-section ended any hope of future vaginal deliveries. But today, thanks largely to changes in surgical technique, VBAC is possible in many cases. In fact, an estimated 75 percent of women who try VBAC have a successful vaginal delivery.
VBAC isn't right for everyone, though. Sometimes a pregnancy complication or underlying condition prevents the possibility of a successful VBAC. Many local hospitals don't offer VBAC because they don't have the staff or resources to handle emergency C-sections.

4. Vacuum Extraction

A vacuum extraction is a procedure sometimes done during the course of vaginal childbirth. During vacuum extraction, a health care provider applies the vacuum (a soft or rigid cup with a handle and a vacuum pump) to the baby's head to help guide the baby out of the birth canal.

5. Forceps Delivery

A forceps delivery is a type of operative vaginal delivery. It's sometimes needed in the course of vaginal childbirth. In a forceps delivery, a health care provider applies forceps (an instrument shaped like a pair of large spoons or salad tongs) to the baby's head to help guide the baby out of the birth canal.

During the first 10 days home with your baby!

First 10 Days
During the first 10 days, knowing how to take care of your newborn baby can make these days full of fun and excitement and lead to minimal stress. JOHNSON'S® is here to help you get off to a good start with a easy list of baby care tips for new moms!
Holding
Your new-born may feel fragile and delicate to you, but don’t be afraid to touch, handle or hold her! In fact, studies show that babies who are held for more than 2 hours per day thrive better and cry less. No baby care guide can be complete without this valuable advice! Know about the various baby massage benefits.
Remember: Your newborn’s neck muscles are not yet developed, so you will need to support her head whenever you pick her up. You should also support her head against your shoulder or with your opposite hand while carrying her.
Bathing
Baby care after birth invariably involves bathing your baby, which is one of the biggest challenges for a new mom. Learn how to bathe a baby and make sure you have all of the bathing supplies ready before she arrives so you don’t have to miss out on a moment with your new little one. Go for a gentle cleanser formulated for babies, like JOHNSON'S® Baby TOP-TO-TOE® Wash. If your baby has more hair, you might try a gentle shampoo, like JOHNSON'S® Baby Shampoo. Don’t be afraid to gently wash the soft spot (called fontanels) on your baby's head.

Baby Care : Important steps in baby care!

baby care
Once you have a baby in your house, the way you clean your house will permanently change. You’ll quickly come to know that it’s not just finding time to clean that changes, but also how it must be done. Suddenly, the new responsibility of parenthood will make you take extra caution and care. With all the adjustments you are making, there are chances that you would feel overwhelmed. But, with a few handy baby care tips—and a little bit of time—you’ll be the best mom in the business, making sure that your little one is as safe in your home all the time.
Have a basket in each room
A basket is really handy for keeping baby’s things and it lets you save space and clean fast. You are able to get things off the floor and store it where you can find them, which will help you in cleaning the baby’s room and maintaining their toys quickly. This also allows you to be efficient when doing a full home clean-up.
Keep household cleaning products handy
Make sure that all adults at home know where the disinfectant and sanitizing spray are to wipe down a dirty spot as soon as they see one.
Get on their level
From our point of view, it’s pretty easy for us adults to look at the decently clean floors and judge it to be clean enough. However, your little kids are going to be spending quite a bit of their time on those floors, and you’re going to want them to be spotless in order to help keep your baby safe from bacteria and viruses. Turn to Dettol disinfectant multiuse hygiene liquid to keep your floor safe and sparkling, without leaving behind any harsh or harmful residues.
Small goals are better than big endeavors
One of the most important things to learn is when you have a newborn, nothing else matter. So, let go of the idea of having a perfect home because the time you lose in making your home perfect, you gain in moments making your life perfect.

11 måste-ha produkter för utlandsföräldrar i Sverige!

11 must-have products for expat parents in Sweden
